Learn to play the didgeridoo and develop your breathing
If you are planning to play the Didgeridoo, here at the Viveka Yoga Centre you have a chance to start learning on a self-made pipe of reed, to which you will mould a bee wax mouth piece.
You will learn to make the basic droning sound - the fundamental:
This is done by vibrating your lips loosely, while pressing them lightly into the mouth piece.
When you can produce the fundamental droning sound, Jo will show you to make some interesting changes to its tone…
After you can get the basic droning sound, you will start to learn the important technique of circular breathing. It can take a few minutes, to learn the basic skill, or a few hours… even a few weeks. It is a case of concentrating on the muscles you use for breathing in and those used in squeezing air out of your puffed-out cheeks. What we are aiming to do here is to keep the droning sound going. That is, keep your mouth and cheeks puffed out while you sniff air in through your nose.
Remember that it takes time and patience to learn anything new. Everybody is different, we all have our own rhythm and the learning practice and the feeling while experimenting is different for each of us.
When you practice didgeridoo, you stay in contact with your breathing, you experiment it and discover until yet unknown possibilities. I think we can say that playing the didgeridoo is a kind of pranayama, conscious breathing. In the yoga practice, you become aware of your body and your breathing. You will then be able to sit comfortably and to blow with ease while playing didgeridoo.
Finally, when you play the didgeridoo, you enter a form of very deep meditation.
